SMTP connect failed was created by HOA-Jay
Hi, I'm using Joomla 3.2.1 and love using the SCLogin module for hiding the "Secret Key" field. However, I've discovered that the Forgot Username? and Forgot Password? links are having problems sending emails via smtp. This is the message I see:

"SMTP connect failed Reminder failed: Failed sending email."

I use smtp for sending emails in other parts of the system with no problem whatsoever (Joomla 'mass mail' and mailcow component, for example). I'm configured for smtp authentication, TLS, port 587, and smtp.1and1.com as host.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Jay

Jay,
The SCLogin doesn't actually perform the "Forgot Password" or "Forgot Username" functions. Those are just links to the built-in Joomla functionality to retrieve that information. The SCLogin module isn't trying to send any emails at all.

I'd recommend verifying your SMTP settings in the Joomla Global Configuration area and/or testing those links with the standard mod_login module. You should see the same behavior with them there as well.

Unfortunately, I don't have a great answer as to why those features are working differently than other aspects of the site you mention, but hopefully the above helps you narrow things down.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex, I appreciate the response and it makes sense that you would use the built-in functionality for retrieving forgotten usernames and passwords. That got me looking in the right place. Upgrading to 3.2.1 not only gave me the annoying Secret Key field, but it also broke the retrieval scripts that had worked previously. The solution was to change smtp security from TLS to NONE and change port from 587 to 25. Mailcow can use secure smtp but, apparently, the new login scripts cannot.

Thanks,
Jay

Definitely strange. Not sure what would have changed in the latest Joomla, but either way, I'm glad we could help narrow it down... and that it wasn't our fault in the first place.. we hate bugs :)

As always though, should you need anything else, just let us know.

Finally, if you haven't already, please consider leaving a rating and review for SCLogin, or our support, on the Joomla Extension Directory. It certainly isn't required, but is very appreciated:

FYI... I also found out that my problems may be specific to using Gantry Framework / RocketTheme with the upgrade to Joomla ver 3.2

I've posted a link to your extension on a few of the forums for others that are struggling with this. Also submitted a review.

Thanks again,
Jay
