Just to let everyone know this has now been solved.... the jomsocial facebook plugin was disabled, but the "api" information was still in the jomsocial setup backend.... If you are experiencing this "fbconnect" conflict the solution is to disable (and remove to trash) the jomsocial fbcoect plugin and delete the facebook api settings from jomsoc backend.
